Ricardo Pitts, MSc, PE: Ricardo is the principal of RNS Consulting located in Vancouver, Washington. He has been a registered structural engineer in the states of Oregon, Washington and California since 2004. Prior to beginning his engineering career, Ricardo was a general contractor in the Northwest and California for 19 years, specializing in commercial, institutional and residential work. Ricardo currently serves as an engineering consultant to Metro and teaches math at Clark College in Vancouver. One of Ricardo’s noteworthy projects as a general contractor was building the 80,000 sq. ft. Evangelical Free Church in San Jose, California. Completed in July 1989, the church was constructed with an array of seismic components. Three months later, on October 17, the Loma Prieta earthquake struck the San Jose/San Francisco Bay area. Measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, the quake lasted for 15 seconds, severely damaging and destroying close to 12,000 homes. Damage to the Evangelical Free Church amounted to one single chandelier falling from the ceiling.
Mia Mahedy-Sexton, PE, GE: Mia, our geotechnical engineer registered in both Oregon and Washington, is the principal of Rapid Soil Solutions (RSS) located in Portland, Oregon. Prior to moving to Oregon from her home state of New York (we won’t hold that against her), Mia was an office engineer for Consolidated Edison of New York. While with Con Ed of New York, and upon first moving to Oregon, Mia oversaw owner interests and the West Side Light Rail Project. She then moved to the contractor’s side of projects, repaving Interstate 5 and building the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tunnel with Impreglio Healy. Mia established Rapid Soil Solutions (RSS) in 2006 to serve developers’ needs in the face of new legislation that required many projects to provide a geotechnical report. During its five years of practice, RSS has handled over 850 projects ranging in size from single-family homes to the new Portland to Milwaukie Light Rail with Tri-Met. Mia enjoys officiating as a starter for the Portland Aquatic Team, where her daughter currently swims.
